Consider the length and format of the assignment. Is the research for a 2-page essay, a 10-page paper, a 5-minute speech, or a panel discussion? Such factors will determine the type of research resources you should use and the amount of materials you'll need.
Before you start your research, you should understand what you are trying to accomplish. Do you need to have a general or more complete understanding of the topic? Are you simply reporting on a subject or are you offering critical analysis? Are you supposed to offer an objective overview of the topic or only discuss your opinions?
To find general information, you'll probably only need to consult a few resources. The primary focus for this type of assignment is to quickly introduce the subject and present any issues that may exist. You may also be asked to offer and defend your opinion(s) on the topic. Above all, since you are limited by length, this type of paper requires that you get to the heart of the matter quickly and succinctly.
For a more in-depth paper, you'll need to find more materials. You'll usually have to research the topic from an historical viewpoint - tracing it from its beginning to its end. Term papers usually require that you go through this process.
Here, you must be able to not only discuss the issue but to take and defend a position on it as well. You'll need to have a more complete understanding of the topic, including an historical perspective as well as what could happen in the future. It is very important that you are not only clear on your position, but that you have a good understanding of your opposition's position and that you can respond to them accordingly.
